When is a marriage not a marriage?

When your spouse is under 25 and you are applying for the student allowance!! I am about to start studying and have been told that the Student Allowance people will not recognise my relationship as my wife is under 25. Was I offended? NO!! Given that it means I can claim full student allowance while my wife works full time. They may not recognise my relationship but I am sure I can still call her my wah :-)

My wife and I are both under 25.
I am a fulltime masters student.
She works.
Our parents earn over the threshold.

I am assessed on my parents' income, so she could be earning $100K pa + and it would make no dent in my eligibility.

We live in Christchurch, and our parents live in Auckland...

Conservatively, the government is saving $5M pa over the next 3 years by exlcuding people like us from the eligibility, and even more by removing the 'independent circumstances' allowance.

Their justification for doing so was to do with human rights and discrimination, but I think it was more about pretending to spend more money on education than they are.

Completely agree with you Paul. In my mind I should not qualify for a student allowance and you should. It is a failure in our system that it is not the other way round.

Not quite on the issue but what is Sarah to you? Did she lose her first name as well when you got married?

You know what I am talking about Ronnie!
